April was not the month writing wise I was hoping for. While I did put forth three reviews, two were music releases and I didn’t progress my “Kurt Russell” project any further despite my intentions. I can’t say that project will have any progress in May either because I have at least four reviews coming up. However, those four releases are pretty exciting and only one will be music related. Let’s talk about it.
The first review out of the gate in May will be Part Two of Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths in a lovely 4k steelbook. It came out about a week ago, and I am really looking forward to the review. Of course, you might be asking yourself where my review for the first part is. Unfortunately, I did not get to review that one. However, I was able to catch it on HBO Max this past weekend. So I am certainly prepared and it’s fresh in my mind. Of course, my collecting OCD will be looking for that steelbook in the near future. Hopefully we do not have that problem when the third one drops which I’m guessing we’ll see in late summer time.
Returning back to my Asian films, I have received a copy of Blue Giant, the recent GKids/Shout Factory Release which streets today. Here is the synopsis:
Dai Miyamoto’s life is turned upside down the day he discovers jazz. A former high school basketball player, Dai picks up a saxophone and begins practicing day and night, determined to become one of the greatest of all time. He leaves his sleepy hometown for the bustling nightclubs of Tokyo, but soon finds the life of a professional musician is not for the faint of heart. His passion eventually wins over the cocky but talented pianist Yukinori, and after Dai convinces his friend Shunji to learn the drums, they launch a new jazz trio whose rough sound contains a raw energy that quickly wins attention from local audiences. But what does it take to truly be great?
It’s not your cookie cutter anime, that’s for sure. From the trailer, it looks like something different and it should be a very fun review.
The two above reviews will be done in correlation with the site I review for, Upcomingdiscs.com The site owner was nice enough to gift me this next one, and while he’s not going to require a review for it, it is a movie that’s near and dear to my heart (so I’ll review it here). That movie is Red Corner with Richard Gere. I saw the movie during premiere night while I was in college. My roommate at the time, who is Chinese provided me with a ticket and I went with him and his group of friends. It was a nice night because my roommate and I were not normally friends, but that night as odd as it sounds made us a little closer in that respect. At least until we graduated from college and he moved back to China to be a conductor. He’s still a Facebook friend though. Anyway, I have fond memories of the movie and I am looking forward to doing a review of this Umbrella release. One interesting thing I’m already seeing is that the Umbrella release has a different commentary track than the original DVD. I don’t mind keeping both discs, but it’s odd that the original commentary did not make the blu-ray.
Finally, streeting at the end of May is newest Lenny Kravitz album, Blue Electric Light. I opted for the deluxe version since they are going to issue it as a little hardback book akin to the recent Depeche Mode albums, or well Lenny Kravitz’s last album, Raise Vibration. The first two songs out of the gate, Human and TK421 have already been released as singles, just Google them. However, if you are watching the video for TK421, you might want to not do it at the office. They are excellent songs though, and I am really looking forward to reviewing this album.
Naturally, if I can mix in something (probably between Red Corner and Lenny Kravitz), I will certainly do so, but it looks like I’ll be pretty busy in the month of May. Thank you for reading and hope one of these four releases are something you are looking forward to. Enjoy.
